Job Description


A Security Systems Engineer is responsible for supporting the IT infrastructure such as networks, servers and storage. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, implementing network security measures in order to protect data, software and hardware. Participate in determining security requirements, risk mitigation strategies and information security solutions while updating/testing security and incident response plans.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Responsible for the implementation of security controls on the network and server systems
  2. Responsible for patch management processes for security and systems updates to all network related devices/operating systems
  3. Responsible for planning, execution and remediation of periodic vulnerability assessments
  4. Responsible for supporting processes such as managing web browsing protections, web contact filtering and secure file transfer of sensitive business processes
  5. Responsible for log collection, correlation, reviews, archival, retention and monitoring of automated alerts for items such as, and not limited to: IPS/IDS alerts, firewall alerts, malware alerts, exploit alerts, etc
  6. Responsible for maintaining network infrastructure and systems environments and provide necessary security recommendations



Education:  Must have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information systems or equivalent computer technology field



At least 5 years experience supporting security components and applying security best practices across an enterprise application/network infrasture.


5 years experience with IT Systems, network and systems management technologies


5 years experience with Cisco routers, switches, and firewalls, including VPN tunnel

Demonstrated experience with virtualization and consolidated server technologies, specifically VMware, vSphere and EXSi virtual infrasture


Experience in managing/using products in areas of Vulnerability Management, Patch Management, IPS/IDS



Knowledge of TCP/IP: must be able to demonstrate technical understanding of all layers of the TCP/IP stack, including familiarity with major application-layer protocols such as HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SFTP, SMTP, DNS, etc


Must be able to read and understand a packet trace; must be able read and interpret network access control logs and lists


A clear understanding of a variety of network and application attacks: example include DoS/DDoS, buffer overflows, SQL injection, reconnaissance scanning, and evasive methods attackers use to avoid detection; must be able to demonstrate a minimum level of familiarity with well-know vulnerabilities and exploits


Maintain and mange MS Active Directory structure and security


Licenses/Certifications Required:  Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) desired.


Supervisory Responsibilities:  This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment:  This job operates in a professional office environment which routinely uses standard office equipment.

Travel:  Up to 10% travel is anticipated.


Security:  Required to consistently demonstrate adherence to all security requirements and accepted practices as contained in the current ES&S Security Policy.  Incumbents must proactively read, comprehend and adhere to all ES&S security policies, practices and procedures regarding the safety and safekeeping of co-workers, products, services and other intellectual property as defined in the ES&S New Business and Non-disclosure, or Proprietary matters, Confidential matters and Non-Competition agreements, and the current ES&S Security Policy Manual.
