Job Description

The Technical Writer writes and updates material for reports, bulletins, user manuals and help files which describes, communicates and educates users concerned with work methods and procedures, installation, operation and maintenance regarding software and hardware products.  The Technical Writer is expected to manage content development by integrating material from subject matter experts across the organization.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develops and writes technical content by studying flowcharts, sketches, drawings, parts lists, specifications, mock ups and product samples to integrate and delineate technology, operating procedures detail.
  1. Interviews subject matter experts (SME) and read reports and other material to become familiar with product technologies and operating methods to draft, review and edit technical documentation.
  1. Organizes material and completes writing assignment according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style and terminology.
  1. Performs a wide variety of editorial function including making recommendations for changes in scope, format and content and maintains records and files of work and revisions while acting as writer and copy editor for electronic and print content using Corporate and Department style guides.
  1. Responsible for the design, development, implementation and upkeep of a learning management system.
  1. Remains current in technological innovations by participating in meetings, and reading journals, trade catalogues and other data relative to operation, maintenance and service of election software and hardware products.

Qualifications:

 

Education:  Must have a bachelor’s degree in Communications, English or Computer Science;

 

 

Experience:          

At least 3 years experience including:

Strong research and technical writing skills including detail orientation and knowledge of AP style and grammar

Strong understanding of branding and developing a voice for a product or service

Proven ability to write for a business-to-business (B2B) audience

Demonstrated project and time management skills

Experience with Adobe Framemaker, RoboHelp, and/or Madcap Flare

Experience using Microsoft Manual of Style

Supervisory Responsibilities:  This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Work Environment:  This job operates in a professional office environment which routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, and photocopiers.

Travel:  Approximately 5% travel is expected.

 

Security:  Required to consistently demonstrate adherence to all security requirements and accepted practices as contained in the current ES&S Security Policy.  Incumbents must proactively read, comprehend and adhere to all ES&S security policies, practices and procedures regarding the safety and safekeeping of co-workers, products, services and other intellectual property as defined in the ES&S New Business and Non-disclosure, or Proprietary matters, Confidential matters and Non-Competition agreements, and the current ES&S Security Policy Manual.
